Covid-19 & Novel Coronavirus - all you need to know

The new virus has begun generating headlines across the globe because of its variable transmission. In December 2019, it all originated from the food market of Wuhan and far-flung to 205 countries causing death closer to 2 lakhs as of now. The virus was officially named in early 2020 as SARS-COVID-19, and WHO announced the infection as world pandemic.

What are the symptoms?

Every day, scientists, doctors, virologists are learning something new while it is getting much more unprecedented than thought. One may carry the virus from two days up to two weeks before the symptoms become apparent. So far, what we know about COVID-19 is that following may or may not be symptoms.

  • Respiratory problems like shortness in breath
  • Having a rough cough that gets severe over a time
  • Fever that gradually increases but may sometimes below-grade in temperature

These are symptoms that are common and may become severe in some people. As soon as you feel anything similar, delay no further and get in touch with your health consultants as soon as possible.

  • Trouble in breathing
  • Turning lips and face to the blue
  • Confusion and becomes clumsy with regular activities
  • Persistent pain in the chest area
  • Drowsiness

Various health departments across the world are investigating more of the symptoms.

Who should not worry?

Even though COVID-19 may seem to have more similarities with the flu, you may become confused. It is difficult to determine as the total cases with mild symptoms are still unfound; instead, they have not seemed treatment. Although COVID is deadly, your seasonal flu is not. Therefore whenever you feel discomfort or confused, get the testing done in extreme cases. This will help you stay calm and be at ease.

Cause for Coronavirus

All we know is Coronavirus is a zoonotic type. This means they are initially developed from animals, and they become fomites that cause infection. But for the virus to transmit from animal to human, the person must be in close contact with the animals.

Note: Zoonotic does not mean that your pet or stray animals can cause you this virus. When touched or being in contact with an infected person, the animals become the transmitting surface. However, animals do not get any infection.

When a human acquires the COVID-19 virus, it can easily be spread from person to person. It is found that majorly they are transmitted by the respiratory droplets – It is a wet substance that can pass on the air while the infected person sneeze or cough. Eventually, the virus hangs in the droplet, and when breathed by another person it gets inside the respiratory tract. Thus windpipe and lungs become the home of COVID-19.

Who is at risk?

Even though there is no apparent risk category, here are some people who need to be preventive and follow all the instructions given by the Government.

  • People existing with lung conditions such as COPD and asthma
  • Affected by Immune Deficiency diseases
  • Suffering from cardiovascular problems
  • Severe obesity
  • Existing with Cancer and Kidney problems
  • Diabetic conditions
  • Any respiratory medical conditions
  • Unhygienic lifestyle

Why should you be quarantined?

Broadly, everyone is at risk; hence many governments across the world have declared the quarantine. For the main reason when the infected person is unaware, it is predicted that they may pass the infection from a minimum of 5 people to 15 people. This is primarily during the incubation period of seven to fourteen days.

As there is no treatment, and if there is any chance that you may have contacted knowingly or unknowingly with the affected person, it's better to stay quarantined. So the transmission of any form is not definitive or may never occur.

What is the diagnosis process for COVID-19?

Just like any other viral infection, even Coronavirus can be diagnosed by the blood, saliva, or tissue sample. To get authentic results, it's recommended using a cotton swab inside your nostrils to retrieve a sample of the respiratory droplet.

The Government is in its full swing to activate labs across India to conduct the tests, and many private hospitals are coordinating. You can always get in touch with the state health department or your primary health care service provider to find the testing lab near you.

What treatments available for COVID-19?

The treatments have not become specific until now. There is no cure or vaccine found until today. However, many healthcare services are trying their best to find a way out. Seeking immediate help from the healthcare professional is one way to combat or reduce the intensity of virus.

Apart from any experimental treatments, there are standard therapies offered for the illness. The methodologies may include

  • External breathing support
  • Antibodies injected to control the virus
  • Blood plasma transfusions
  • Steroids for reducing the lung swellings

How should you take care of yourself?

  • Thoroughly and regularly cleans your hands with the alcohol-based sanitizers or soap water
  • Maintain at least 3 feet distance between anyone who shows problematic symptoms
  • Don't touch your face unless it's necessary especially when you are outside
  • Sneeze or cough by covering your mouth with the inside of the elbow.
  • It's better to stay inside the home if you feel abnormal
  • Stay hygiene and clean objects that you regularly use.
  • People with chronic and respiratory problems are recommended to take all the prescribed dosages in routines.
  • Keep the immune system strong with the healthy diet and nutrition

Whom should you consult for queries?

First and foremost - Never Panic. Whether you or your family members are sick or found to be with the symptoms, get professional help immediately. If anyone is infected, it is better that you do not get exposed to the virus. There are regular exclusive ambulance and healthcare facilities arranged by the Government to combat COVID-19.

If you have a point of care services, it's well and good. Get in touch with them immediately. If you are confused about the suspect or need counseling to deal with the COVID-19, then you can approach Medapp. Our experts can channelize you in the right direction.

Corona Testing Worldwide

From the advisory of ICMR it is confirmed that Population in hotspot areas may be tested using rapid antibody tests. Adding that all the antibody positives would be confirmed by RT-PCR (polymerase chain reaction) using throat/nasal swab, and antibody negatives would be quarantined at home. ICMR had also released detailed guidelines late yesterday for these tests. These are:

  • Rapid antibody tests approved by U.S. FDA/CE-IVD or non-CE-IVD validated by ICMR-NIV with marketing approval by Drug Controller General can be used.
  • All such organizations must register themselves on the ICMR portal and upload data in real time. Individuals who tested negative must be confirmed by real-time PCR test, if warranted or home quarantined, and repeats the antibody test after 10 days.

COVID testing strategy in India

Types of Test: An antigen test that will help to trace the presence or absence of the Coronavirus in the body. The antibody test helps in identifying the immune response of the person who has already been infected.

Traditional Procedure: For 30 years now, the laboratories have been using the Polymerase Chain Reaction, which is a standard procedure to confirm the genetic code. The Chinese published the genetic code in Mid-January as Sars-CoV-2. A nasal swab test has been taken for the PCR samples to get the best results. Thus Antigen testing with this sample will reveal if the individual is affected by the COVID-19.

Antibody Test Kit: antibody test use the blood sample to confirm the immunity conferred by past infection. The test kits use protein to glue the antibodies present in the blood.

Antibody tests are recommended by most of the countries because it provides an authorization that the individuals can return to society with no fear of picking this infection again. Also, while conducting the test for a sample population, it answers the epidemiological questions like how many people were infected without any symptoms of COVID-19.

Highlight: Antibody tests can give results faster than the traditional PCR methods taken. From a few minutes to a few hours, the antigen kits can reveal the results.

Time taken for the test Kits: As soon as the countries realized that Coronavirus is a global threat, much government took the initiative in creating the tests. However, only a few wear successful. US Center for Disease Control and Prevention and Public Health England have tremendous experience and knowledge with PCR technology and diagnostics. Many private centers can forward in developing and manufacturing the antibody tests. However, it takes more time for creating the antibody kits.

Now there are 202 companies across the world using the technology to create these tests. Out of which 92 are from china where the pandemic was originated. But the Governments are not limiting themselves to antigen and antibody tests. Every day, technologists are trying to find new methods for testing the Sars-CoV-2.

Reliability of the test:The PCR test is exceptionally accurate if experienced technicians conduct it. The accuracy and reliability of the antibody tests are validated by the technicians every time before the results are sent out.
